Xieng Khouang Local Events

There are numerous festivals and events in Xieng Khouang Province. Please see below for some of the Phonsavan events which make activities to plan your Xieng Khouang travel around. Just make sure to book your Phonsavan hotel in advance if you are coming during one of these events.

A ceremony for calling for the rains is performed in the temple during the morning. In the afternoon, people gather in fields on the outskirts of towns and villages to launch their rockets with much revelry. Villages, communities and civil departments compete for the best decorated and the highest traveling rockets. Beginning around the middle of May, the festival dates are staggered from village to village, enabling more participation and larger attendances.

Boun Ork Pansa occurs on the full moon marking the end Buddhist Lent. Monks who were ordained for the three months of Lent can leave the temple and rejoin their families.

Xieng Khouang is a popular place for people to spend Christmas and New Year. Hotels and Guesthouses are often booked outt in advance. Please book early to avoid disappointment.

Lao New Year is the biggest and most famous of the festivals in Laos, and is one of the Hid Sip Song (12 traditional festivals). The festival is also known as the water festival and it coincides with the end of the dry season and the start of the rains. Xieng Khouang is rich in cultural traditions, and is a popular destination for both international and domestic tourists and this time of year.
